My roots in Baby massage began twenty six years ago during my early mothering years. In 1979 I read three very impressionable books Loving Hands by Frederick Leboyer, Infant Massage by Vimalya Schneider, and Touching by Ashley Montague. One thing that truely struck a chord with me looking at the children's faces during and after massage was how truly happy they were. They had beautiful little smiles that radiated peace and happiness. To me it was evident that a loving trusting connection existed between baby and mother. I thought if I could accomplish this through my touch then surely my child will get everything else. They will grow and develop into fine adults. So daily I began stroking my babies daily looking at the pictures in the books. While the books were beneficial I knew that it wasn't like having a real person teaching the ins and outs, but it was all I had.
Years later as my children grew I went back to school to become an RN. Upon graduation I took a job as a labor and delivery nurse in a tertiary care hospital in springfield, IL. It was there that I began teaching childbirth education. Through teaching couples I revisited my roots in an attempt to address the needs of my couples helping them to discover parenting skills. Remembering my own experiences with baby massage, that it had not only enriched my mothering experience but also my babies experiences, I searched for a baby massage class that could easily be incorporated into a baby friendly hosptial based program.
Finding Teresa's course was a blessing, I eagerly hopped a plane and flew to Chapel Hill North Carolina to become a instructor of Baby's First Massage Program. Teresa's program spun me in a new career direction, as after completing the program I went back to school to become a RN Massage Therapist. I have been teaching baby massage for five years at my own massage clinic. Following my own nursing practice I created my own massage practice that was life span based. While, I am no longer in the hospital both hospitals refer to me and I enjoy teaching and helping couples discover the many benefits of doing Baby's First Massage with their newborns. I welcome you to our family of Baby Massage Instructors and look forward to sharing my experiences with you. Come join us and help us make a difference in a child's life through teaching appropriate touch to parents.
